Forum reflection :Ex-scholarship holder in opposition ? Not big deal----John

http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/STIStory_484046.html

I am strongly agree with the view of author . As a government scholarship holder , we are supposed to contribute to the society which gives us the chance to receive further education .

But actually , what we face after graduate may not be favouring as imaginary especially in political career . Since all the Ex-scholars are seemed as foreign by local government , their political career would be much more difficult and tough than other local candidates . Most importantly , there are some policies such as , foreign cannot take the positions above certain ranks may consequently and probably keep foreign ,especially the Ex-scholars away from power centre . To the consideration of further society service , some of the Ex-scholars may choose to join the opposition party . Generally speaking , that is not a normal way a scholar should do to contribute to the society .

However, to consider this case further and deeper , that could also be another way to fulfil our promise. Because , the opposition party can till help people and voice for people to some degree . If there are several party existed , society will be more stable and solid . Different parties will try different ways to help people and benefit people in order to get the support from people. There is not such thing like , it is terrible to join opposition . Actually , that is a normal tendency around the world that people join the opposition party to serve society further .

  1. I can not totally agree with what is said above. Firstly, it is reasonabble that foreign cannot take political above certain rank, because every contry has political independence right which is supposed to be interferenced by foreigners. If an ex-scholar are willing to be a menber of singaporean government,he can take singaporean nationality then he is no longer a foreigner.
Secondly, there is nothing wrong to join the opposition as a scholar holder, since it is not all the ex-scholarships are only provided by the government but also companies like Singapore Airline. Even if it is "provided by the government", it is not equal to " provided by the governing parties". They are just distributing the revenue comes from the socirty.
If the opposition can really benefit Singapore, go ahead. Thirdly, more and more talents and well-qualified people join the opposition indicates that the governing party is losing the support. What they need to do is to governing effectivly and efficiently, to serve the citizens with heart and soul,to make every efforts into giving Singapore a brighter future.
