J O H N :Singapore’s productivity level is 60—70% of what is possible: PM Lee
"(Husbands can) start by changing nappies!" said Mr Lee. "When the kids grow a bit older, you’re not just a father figure, but you’re helping around the house and showing them a good example, so when they grow up they also know how to look (after) the house."
Lee Hsien Loong , the Prime Minister of Singapore just discussed about the economy situation in Singapore .Pointing out there are possibilities for Singapore to increase its productivity by 60 to 70 percent . "It’s a turning point. Your numbers will grow more slowly and if you want the economy to do well, that means the productivity must go up," said Mr Lee. To help the staff to increase their productivity level , the government has come up with several ways and introduce some advanced devices to achieve the expectation .
Basically, it is a right time and right way to point out this problem. As the international economy crisis hits the Asia and influence Singapore’s original financial plan , the government must take the responsibility to cool down the over mass economy order . Singapore is a country with limited resource and space .In order to encourage domestic economic development, the financial strategy must very focus on productivity and working efficiency . The opening of Resorts World Sentosa and casino can also be consider as the another way of capital flow and investment return .

Kevin new reflection
Loss-limit system for Singapore casino.
It's my reflection about Singapore issue, the new casino in Singapore.
In Singapore opening casino, patrons will be able to declare a loss limit before they start a game. Once they reach the limit, they may need to stop gaming or see a counsellor to continue. The NCPG said that, this voluntary loss-limit system is implemented to prevent gamers getting out of mind to lose more money. However the same policy was carried out much more strictly in Australia, that once patrons reach the limit, they will not be allowed to continue gaming.
In my opinion, no matter how, casino itself is not good for both individual and the whole society. So the policy like loss-limit system is not that beneficial. However the system in Singapore's new casino is not strict. Since I don't think the so-called counsellor will have any effect, when patrons have already been too emotional.
So I think Sinagore government pays too much attention on making profits. In addtion, if you take out a policy, you should make it strict, not only for showing people you are caring about it.

Tough lives of elderly Singaporeans-Sally
As a student from China, I find it strange to see most cleaners in Singapore are old people. Some of them must be over sixty years old. Some are even older. Watching them wiping tables, collecting dirty trays or cleaning toilets, I often think of my grandparents, who exercise in the morning and dance at night with other old people. Like most elderly in China, they really enjoy their retirement.
However, cafes, canteens, hawker centers, washrooms in companies or schools… the aged in singapore can be seen doing cleaning work almost everywhere. They are supposed to live in comfort in their old ages, playing with grandchildren or raising flowers. Why are they still doing this kind of menial work with low incomes?
I believe these old people work so hard not just because they do not want to retire, but need to feed themselves and their families. Most aged workers are lowly skilled and their income has either stagnated or decreased in recent years, which made it difficult for them to save for retirement. In fact, only 27% of Singaporeans between 25 and 75 said that they had sufficient funds to retire, compared with 61% of Thais and 47% of Malaysians, according to an AIA survey.
Besides, the cost of living continues rising, not to mention the always high medical expenses. There is a common saying among Singaporeans – “One can afford to die, but not fall sick in Singapore.” For aged people, their poor health conditions require more medical care, which means huge amounts of money for them.
In addition, children in Singapore are busy with their own lives. They work, buy houses or cars, get married, have children…but just forget their parents. Some may visit parents and send them money sometimes, but there are others who still “borrow” money from the poor aged or even send their parents to Nursing Homes.
Last Tuesday, Feb 2nd, a 69 year old Singapore lady by the name of Li Mei Xiang committed suicide by jumping from the 13th level of her flat because of financial distress. It is not an uncommon case in Singapore. A 74 year old elderly lady jumped from her flat a few months ago due to worries about her medical expenses.
Singapore is the second richest nation in Asia, but compared to other countries, old people here are having much tougher times. Just consider how much they have contributed to the making of the current modern and first world Singapore, I think governments should provide more social welfare benefits to them. Moreover, the sons and daughters need to consider it a moral obligation to look after their parents. It is the duty of all people and the society to ensure the elderly can enjoy a dignified retirement, and thus we will be able to prevent tragedies above from happening.

From Airshow to YOG
Last weekend, more than 71,000 people caught the Singapore Airshow. The Airshow is described as the number one in Asia and world number three. This year, the event was successfully conducted for the long queues were not existed any more at the security check points, and there was no more transport problems. However, some visitors still felt upset about the show for part of the high level performance was canceled because of the technical fault and the economic downturn.
I think it is always not easy to hold a world level event, especially for such a high-technology one. I believe Singapore government has made an enough preparation to receive a great many of people, thus the visitors do not have to wait in the entrance for long. Furthermore, shuttle bus is a good way to solve the transport problem. Because the outdoor venue is on the east part of Singapore, it is not convenient for spectators to get there from the MRT station.
Although the Airshow holder has done a good job, I think there are still some problems besides the technical fault. First, the show was at the afternoon, most visitors have been sunburnt. It is necessary to remind them to take an umbrella or sunscreen scram. Second, the holder could provide some recommended routes to separate people to different parts. Then, there would not be so many queued in the heat for up to 30 minutes for a chance to get into the cockpit or pose for pictures with the pilots.
All in all, it is a good opportunity for Singapore government to practice for the coming Youth Olympic Games. Carry on the advantages and improve the disadvantages.

Forum reflection :Ex-scholarship holder in opposition ? Not big deal----John
http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/STIStory_484046.html
I am strongly agree with the view of author . As a government scholarship holder , we are supposed to contribute to the society which gives us the chance to receive further education .
But actually , what we face after graduate may not be favouring as imaginary especially in political career . Since all the Ex-scholars are seemed as foreign by local government , their political career would be much more difficult and tough than other local candidates . Most importantly , there are some policies such as , foreign cannot take the positions above certain ranks may consequently and probably keep foreign ,especially the Ex-scholars away from power centre . To the consideration of further society service , some of the Ex-scholars may choose to join the opposition party . Generally speaking , that is not a normal way a scholar should do to contribute to the society .
However, to consider this case further and deeper , that could also be another way to fulfil our promise. Because , the opposition party can till help people and voice for people to some degree . If there are several party existed , society will be more stable and solid . Different parties will try different ways to help people and benefit people in order to get the support from people. There is not such thing like , it is terrible to join opposition . Actually , that is a normal tendency around the world that people join the opposition party to serve society further .

I refer to Jan 27, Wednesday's letter by Mr Wong Yeow Chong, 'Be single-minded about having more babies', and Ms Huang Meifang's response on Saturday, 'Govt’s done enough, it’s up to couples'.
It was reported on Tuesday, Jan 26 that for the first time in five years, Singaore has had fewer babies. I agree with Mr Wong that the cost of living is quite high in Singapore while people are busy with work and study in order to be more competitive, but I think the root cause of not or postponing procreating is that nowadays people’s view on marriage and family is quite different from the tradition, as what Ms Huang said, “many people simply do not see procreation as a priority”.
Through the ages, having children and bring up them are considered as a must for couples, especially in eastern culture. In ancient China, no posterity was even regarded as the greatest offense against filial piety. However, today many couples no longer take procreation and parenting as their duties. Some of them think that they do not have enough time and money to provide decent home environments or good educations for children. For some wealthy people, they love their new additions so much and prefer to spend lavish time and money on pets rather than babies. It seems that people today are not willing to take physical and mental pressure to raise children, making greater commitment.
Although people’s changing mindsets and attitudes is the basic reason, the high cost of living also has a great influence on the fertility rate in Singapore. Looking after aging parents, saving for retirements, high medical costs, rocketing house and commodity prices with low salary increment, how can parents have enough time and money to put effort on children? The government did put effort to increase the birthrate, like introducing a “baby bonus” scheme, but there are more the government can do to help procreation. Besides developing the economy, which is the prerequisites for everything, the government can also reduce the medical cost and educational expenses for children. Chinese government has declined the tuition for primary school students in 2008. Perhaps Singapore government can learn from this and do better. Moreover, increase propaganda on the traditional marriage and family values. Encourage more young couples to face the pressure and enjoy the happiness of raising children.
To have children or not, everyone needs to consider about this (except “accidents”). What the government can do is to change people’s attitudes and provide more economic benefits for parents and children.

Gangster threatens on Facebook
LONDON - A BRITISH gangster is using Internet social networking site Facebook to threaten people who he says he will target after his release, a newspaper reported on Sunday.
Colin Gunn, serving 35 years for conspiracy to murder after ordering the execution of two people, said he was allowed to set up the account by prison bosses, the Sunday Times said.
In one posting, the 42-year-old wrote: 'I will be home one day and I can't wait to look into certain people's eyes and see the fear of me being there.'
Another said: 'It's good to have an outlet to let you know how I am, some of you will be in for a good slagging, some have let me down badly, and will be named and shamed'.
Gunn operated his gang out of Nottingham, central England, the location of several high profile gun murders in recent years. The paper said his account was shut down on Friday.
A spokesman for Britain's Ministry of Justice said that prisoners only have access to the Internet 'for educational purposes' and are banned from using social networking sites. Justice Secretary Jack Straw added: 'We will not hesitate to refer to the police any published material that appears to breach the law.' -- AFP
Reflection:
A local newspaper reported that a British gangster is using Internet social networking site fackbook to threaten people. One prisoner, Colin Gunn, serving 35 years for conspiracy to murder said that he was allowed to set up the account by prison bosses. His account was shut down on Friday because of his threatening word put on his website. A spokesman for Britain’s Ministry of Justice said prisoners only have access to the Internet for education purposes and should not use social networking sites. They will ensure there will not be any material published to breach the law.
My own opinion is prisoners have the right to get the access to the Internet, because it will be easier for them to communicate with other people in the society, which can avoid leading to the situation that they will be out of the society after their release and can do nothing good to the society. However, they cannot put any material which breaches the law, or to threaten others. Because it is bad for social development. In this situation, the right of having the access to the Internet should be confiscated.

HDB ready to build more flats if there is demand
THE figures quoted by Mr Gurmit Singh Kullar ('It was inevitable that the reduced supply would impact the housing market', Jan 16) refer to the number of HDB flats completed, not the number of flats offered for sale.
As Build-To-Order (BTO) flats take about three years to complete, the lower number completed between 2006 and 2008 was a consequence of the smaller number launched in the early 2000s.
This was a time when HDB had a large stock of unsold flats available for sale, hence the smaller than usual number of BTO flats launched.
The BTO system is responsive to demand, allowing HDB to offer more or fewer flats depending on need. Following the demand pick-up in the second half of last year, HDB has ramped up new flat supply to 9,000 BTO flats last year.
Together with other sales exercises, a total of 13,500 units were offered last year.
We are ready to supply a similar number of new flats this year, and more if there is sustained demand.
The 24,000 annual marriages, which Mr Gurmit quoted, is not an appropriate indicator of the actual demand for HDB flats.
This is because the figure includes re-marriages and non-citizen marriages, where the newly formed households may not qualify for new HDB flats.
Also, some citizen households have alternative housing options such as HDB resale flats, private housing, or they live with their parents and do not need to apply for new flats.
In recent years, the number of first-timers buying new flats or subsidised resale flats has averaged between 13,000 and 15,000 a year.

Reflection
I REFER to the article’ HDB ready to build more flats if there is demand’ by Ignatius Lourdesamy, the deputy director of Housing & Development Board. In this article, he indicated that the Build-To-Order system is responsive to demand, allowing HDB to offer more or fewer flats depending on need. In addition, he gave an example that the lower number completed between 2006 and 2008 was a consequence of the smaller number launcher in the early 2000s.
In my opinion, I strongly agree with the author. It is important to make the supply satisfy the demand of the market. Just as he had mentioned that between 2006 and 2008, it is because the amount of available flats of HDB is smaller than usual number of BTO flats launched. Moreover, I think the BTO system is an efficient way to find out the market demand. For instance, 9,000 flats of 13,500 which were sold last year were ordered through BTO.
However, the way which Mr. Gurmit analyzed the reason of the annual marriage could not indicate the actual demand for HDB flats is not proper. On the one hand, there are re-marriages and non-citizen marriages which will not buy new flats. On the other hand, I think most new households of non-citizen marriages are qualify for HDB flats. Because they make their marriages here in Singapore which means they have already get the qualification. So I think the government should attach great importance to make a research on the real demand on HDB flats every year to avoid the rise of flat’s price.

After Google’s Stand on China, U.S. Treads Lightly
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/15/world/asia/15diplo.html?ref=todayspaper
Last month , the Google engineers began an secret counteroffensive with the intruders who are suspected as Chinese . The evidence show the source of the attacks might in Taiwan and the intruders have attacked not only Google ,but at least other 33 companies are included .Such as Adobe Systems, Northrop Grumman and Juniper Networks .Quite a number of experts from America got together and assembled powerful evidence. Finally came to the result that the masterminds of the attacks were not in Taiwan, but on the Chinese mainland . However ,there is no clear and strong evidence which can directly prove Chinese government is involved the case .A statement made by White House spokesman ,Rober Gibbs announced Mr. Obama supported Google’s decision not to accept Chinese censorship of searches made on its system in China .
In the view of writer , the Chinese government is the mastermind in case . He tried to convince readers to believe the whole mess is caused for certain political purposes . In my opinion , it could be possible that is article was also written for some political used . Evidence is the most important part . If there is no evidence can directly show the Chinese government send spies to attack Google’s network system , China is innocent and can also be consider as a victim after the whole thing happened .The censorship in China has been established for years and it is really effective to purify the network environment . I quite appreciate it . I have to said , there is only one rule can be obeyed in the competition between nations, which points out the benefit is the most important stuff in the world .

I quite appreciate it . I have to said , there is only one rule can be obeyed in the competition between nations, which points out the benefit is the most important stuff in the world .

Google vs. China, there is no winner
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/15/opinion/15iht-edcohen.html?scp=1&sq=google%20vs.%20china&st=cse
Just a few days ago, Google claimed that it will cease cooperating with Chinese censorship of Google.cn and might withdraw from China. As the article has mentioned that, China, which is called as world’s manufacturer, is highly developing these years by using globe technology and resources. However, it seems like that the level of openness in China cannot match with its prosperity and development. Since YouTube, Twitter and Facebook are all blocked, Google.cn becomes the next sacrifice of the war between censorship and human rights,
In my opinion, I think everyone has the freedom of speech, but the freedom does not mean one can say everything he likes through the internet. This is way we should have censorship to control the internet. On the one hand, we need the censorship; on the other hand, the censorship in China has blocked so many foreign websites, such as YouTube and Facebook. I think the problem occurs because there is no strict criterion to judge whether the website should be shown or not. From my own perspective, the government should ask the people to set the correct criterion. “The people” contains not only the netizens, but all citizens in this society.
All in all, there is no winner between Google and China. For Google, it loses the biggest market around the world, for China, she loses the trust of its people, so both of them should take a seat and give a solution to this problem to avoid it from happening again.

At 6-6, Rockets’ Chuck Hayes Is the Mite in the Middle
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/14/sports/basketball/14rockets.html?scp=1&sq=Chuck%20Hayes&st=cse
In the entire 63-year history of NBA, few palyers are as short as the 6-foot-6 Hayes as a regular starting center. Somehow he is quite skillful and fast. Because of injuries to the two highest player, Hayes got more chance to show his ability, even though forward is his natural position. He is not tall enough to block shots, however he is quick to move swiftly to help his teammates to defence weakside penetration. Since his center of gravity is so low, that people will not move him when he gets set, he becomes a good defencer against the league's best post player including Dwight Howard and Andrum Bynum. On the other hand, though there is little notice about him, since he only gets average 4.7 points and 6.1 rebounds a game, he is still a very important part which is helping Rockets out of tribulations to success.
Since I am a fan of Huston Rockets, I watched a lot of their games. I do appreciate Hayes's performance. Especially in the situation without the highest player Yao Ming, he palys hard to make up for the loss, and becomes the center of Rockets' defence line. Besides, I think the author's view is quite objective, he didn't write about Hayes only according to himself's opinion, but also quoted others' words, especially the famous coachs' ones. I think Hayes can make full use of his abilities to play good games, and help Rockets to the success.

Is treatment wrong, if patients benefited?
News from: by Leong Wee Keat,05:55 AM Jan 14, 2010,TODAYonline
Dr Gobinathan, a neurologist, lodged an appeal to the Court of Three Judges on Wednesday this week. Last August he was convicted of professional misconduct by Singapore Medical Council (SMC) Disciplinary Committee, after he suggested Ultrasound Sonolysis for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease to an elderly woman in 2006 and availed her. The committee had adjudged that the safety of Ultrasound therapy was unsubstantiated since there was no experiment practice or physic proof, so it was not appropriate to use Ultrasound in clinical neurology practice.
Dr Gobinathan’s lawyer argued 700 patients had been successfully treated by the neurologist using Ultrasound with no complications, while SMC’s lawyer, Dr Myint Soe, pointed out that Dr Devathasan’s study had involved only 15 patients. In my opinion, no matter how many patients are treated and benefited, as long as the new medical technology does not undergo formal clinical trials, it is not recommendable or correct for a doctor to apply it on patients, regardless of his purpose. Even mature medical technologies should vary and change sometimes depending on the different symptoms and body conditions of patients, needless to talk about a treatment that “is not sufficiently known or sufficiently covered in medical publications”.
However, Dr Devathasan’s lawyer also added that the neurologist had also shared his discoveries at an international conference. Since the Ultrasound treatment has been found effective for Parkinson’s disease at least four years ago, why has it not been tested till today? I suggest an efficient and clear medical technology clinical practice admittance regime should be established in order to examine new treatments’ safety as well as efficacy. Therefore these technologies can be quick improved, perfected and applied on patients.
